Frequently Asked Questions about Hair Removal

How does the laser remove hair?
The laser emits a beam of light that is attracted to the pigment or melanin in the hair follicle that is in an active growing cycle.

What is the advantage of using a laser? Lasers are precise instruments that can be adjusted to the exact parameters that will specifically disable the hair follicle. The laser uses a wide beam that treats many hairs at once instead of treating hair-by-hair like electrolysis.

Is laser hair removal permanent?
The FDA has cleared laser hair removal regardless of the laser for “Permanent Hair Reduction” only. We believe that the hair treated will probably not re-grow. Each individual’s treatment response may be different because of hair or skin type. There are between 500 and 1000 follicles per square inch, of which many are dormant at the time of treatment.

What if I have gray, white, blonde, red, or light fine hair?
Since the laser is attracted to the pigment in the hair follicle, this hair color may not have enough pigment to be successfully treated with the laser. If this applies to you, we may want to try a test spot to see if your hair responds to the laser. The CoolGlide Difference CoolGlide systems are the best laser hair removal systems on the market for all skin tones, from light to dark, including tan patients. Their unique design, longer wavelength, and innovative cooling design allow extremely effective, safe, and permanent results.

What areas can be treated with CoolGlide systems?
CoolGlide laser systems can remove hair from all parts of the body.

What do CoolGlide laser treatments feel like?
As the name implies, the CoolGlide handpiece cools and soothes as it glides along your skin. When the pulse of the light is delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation.

How many treatments will I need?
Most areas require 5-6 treatments, but the number of CoolGlide treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on various factors such as your hair’s thickness, the area treated, and your hair growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time, but actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting.

What happens after treatment? Immediately following your CoolGlide treatment, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Three to seven days after treatment you may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment, and are not regrowing. Between treatments you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave.

Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?
Following the treatment, you can return to your normal activities right away. The use of sunblock is recommended.

What are the possible side effects? Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur.

How do CoolGlide lasers compare with other hair removal methods?
Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all temporary methods that must be repeated on a frequent basis. CoolGlide lasers offer permanent hair reduction for lasting results.

How do CoolGlide lasers compare with Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a tedious, invasive, and painful process that involves inserting a needle into each individual hair follicle and delivering an electrical charge to them one at a time. By delivering light energy to hundreds of hair follicles at a time, CoolGlide lasers effectively treat an area in just seconds that would take over an hour with electrolysis.
