LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Laser hair removal with the LightSheer Diode provides permanent hair removal for almost any skin type. It will generally take 3-6 treatments for most individuals to achieve optimal results, depending on hair and skin type. The LightSheer laser beam works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle, therefore can only be used on hair that has color. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second and vaporizes the pigment, thus destroying or significantly impeding the hair's ability to re-grow. A unique, patented sapphire-tipped hand piece cools on contact to protect the skin. Treatments are generally tolerable for most patients and can be described like a "pinching" or "bee-sting" sensation. Depending on the treatment area, treatments can take just a few minutes to longer than an hour. Sessions need to be repeated every 7-12 weeks depending on the treatment area. Pricing is based on treatment area and is determined at free consultation.
To understand laser hair removal, you may want to know the basics of how hair grows. Hair forms in a pouch like structure below the skin called a hair follicle. What we see as hair is actually the hair shaft, which is the keratinized, hardened tissue that grows from this follicle. Humans have more hair follicles per square inch of skin than most higher primates, including chimpanzees and gorillas. Because most of this hair is fine and pale (called vellus hair), it usually isn’t visible to the naked eye. Consider this: the forehead has more hair follicles than any other part of the body. The thicker, fully pigmented hair most people consider “real hair†is called terminal hair. This hair is found on scalp, eyebrows, legs, backs, underarms, and genital areas. This is the hair the LightSheer diode laser can treat.
Everyone’s hair grows differently, depending on age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, and other factors. But all hair goes through three distinct growth phases:
* Active growth phase (called the anagen phase), which lasts up to several years. At any given time, the majority (85%) of our body hair is in this phase. During anagen, the hair has an abundance of melanin.
* Regressive phase (catagen phase), which lasts about two weeks, during which the hair stops growing but is not yet shed. About 5% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time.
* Resting phase (telogen phase), which lasts 5 - 6 weeks, at the end of which the hair falls out and a new hair begins to form. Approximately 10% of our body hair is in this phase at any one time.
Best results are obtained when spacing appointments approximately 6-12 weeks apart (depending on the treatment area) giving the hair follicles enough time to reach the anagen (active growth) phase cycle. The length of time the procedure will take will depend on the size of the area to be treated.
FAQ
1.How many treatments are required ?
Most people require 3-6 treatments to achieve optimal results. The number of treatments you may require depend on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density and your hair’s growth cycle. Your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism all play a part in your hairs’ location, thickness and resilience.
Treatment time will depend on the size of the area to be treated. Smaller areas such as the upper lip can be treated in just a few minutes, where full legs or a man’s back would take an average of approximately 1-3 hours.
2. Are the results permanent ?
The FDA has authorized the use of the Lumenis LightSheer for permanent hair removal. This decision was not made lightly. Only after years of reviewing statistical scientific data on the results obtained with the LightSheer system, was this claim made. This is a claim very few lasers in the world today are able to make and that is why we use this laser. The LightSheer is known as the gold standard in permanent hair removal.
3. What should I do to prepare for the treatment?
Absolutely no waxing, tweezing, depilatories or bleaching for 2-3 weeks before your treatment. You can shave or clip the hairs down if desired instead. Before your treatment, you are should let the hair grow out for a few days so the laser technician can see the hair. It doesn’t have to be very long, so 2-3 days growth should suffice in most cases. You should not put any lotion or oils on the treatment area beforehand. If you have lotion or makeup on, it will be washed off before your treatment. You should not use tanning beds 3-4 weeks before your treatment.
4. What is the treatment like?
The laser technician will shave the hairs that are going to be treated. The laser will be placed directly onto the skin. It will feel cool because of the ChillTip technology. When the laser pulses, you will feel a slight stinging sensation. It is tolerable for most patients, but can be a little uncomfortable depending on the area being treated. The laser will be passed over the entire treatment area. Once the treatment is finished, an application of aloe will be applied to cool and calm the skin.
5. What can I expect after the treatment?
After the treatment, the skin will appear pink like a sunburn, and there may be little red bumps in the area. This is a normal reaction and usually subsides in a few minutes to a few hours. You may also have little black dots that resemble black pepper in the treatment area. That is the hair that the laser has singed, and can be washed off after the treatment. Your skin will feel a little sensitive like a sunburn until the end of the day, and this sensitivity can linger for a few days in some cases.
6. What happens to the hairs after they are treated?
After you have had a laser hair removal treatment, you will begin a shedding process. This generally takes 3-6 weeks. The hairs that have been treated will work themselves out and slowly fall out. During the shedding process, it may appear that the hairs are growing very slowly, but they are not growing at all, they are shedding. Once the hairs have fallen out, you will go through a phase when there is very little hair at all in the treatment area. It will remain that way for several weeks until the next cycle of hairs begin to grow in. Once it is grown in, you will be due for your next visit, and repeat the process again. As mentioned before, you will have to have 3-6 treatments in most cases to hit all of the hair as it goes into the anagen stage.
7.How long before I can return to normal activity ?
Most people can return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, in most cases. For women who have had treatment on their face, makeup can be applied to cover up the immediate redness that you may have. You should not expose the treatment area to excessive sunlight for 1-2 weeks following the procedure, so please use heavy sunscreen if the treatment area will be exposed to the sun.
8. What advantage does the LightSheer have over other laser hair removal systems ?
The LightSheer is the gold standard and leader in laser hair removal systems. It has FDA approval for permanent hair removal. The LightSheer uses ChillTip technology to cool the skin on contact, making treatments more comfortable and safe. It is able to treat almost any skin color, and can treat hair that has pigment. There is no laser that can remove white, grey, or blonde hair so we offer electrolysis as well.
9. Why should I use the LightSheer Diode Laser System rather than the methods I’ve been using for years ?
Waxing, tweezing, depilatories and shaving are all temporary ways to remove hair. They are processes that need to be repeated over and over again literally forever. Why bother doing that continuously when you can permanently get rid of the hair that is bothering you? If you are tired of the hassle of removing your hair, then laser is the best option for you. Its an amazing process that can truly be life changing for so many people. Whether you have embarrassing hair on your face that you tweeze constantly, or you are just tired of the razor rash you get from shaving, you really should consider laser as your best option for hair removal.
