All treatments at Michigan Laser Centers are preformed by registered nurses and laser technicians.

What does it feel like?
The feel of the laser on the skin has been described in many different ways. Some say it feels like a pinch on the skin, others say it feels like a mild rubber band snap.

How many treatments will I need?
Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time. They actually go through three distinct phases: growing, resting and dying off. The laser treatment works by disabling hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. On average, most clients are happy with 6 treatments, however since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all hair follicles in a given area. Treatments are usually given in intervals of 6-12 weeks, depending on the particular area of the body being treated and the density of the hair in that area. Our staff will work with you to develop the best treatment program during your consultation.

Are there any side effects?
Several minutes after treatment, localized slight swelling and redness may be present in the treated area for up to 8 hours. The treatment area any fell tender of warm, similar to mild sunburn. Side effects can be minimized by avoiding sun exposure for 4 weeks prior to and during treatment.

Can I still remove hair between treatments?
You may shave, use a depilatory cream or trim hairs. However, you should not use waxing, electrolysis or plucking or any method that removes the hair from the follicles.

How Laser Hair Removal Works?
*The laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light that which is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicles.
*Prior to the procedure, the treatment area is shaved.
*During the procedure the upper layer of the skin is compressed and cooled with special cooling hand piece.
*This feature protects skin and makes the procedure more effective. Then the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to heat up the hair and disable the follicle's ability to re grow.

FAQ

Is laser hair removal dangerous?
As with any medical treatment, the use of lasers can have some side effects. However, side effects have been minor and manageable in clinical use.

Will I need more than one procedure?
Your hair grows in cycles, however, not all of your hair is on the same cycle. Laser treatments are made to attack hair that is in the active growth, or anagen, stage of its cycle. Therefore you will almost always need more than one procedure to completely treat one area, no matter how big or small it may be. The more procedures you have the better your outcome will be each time.

What about tanning/sun exposure during treatments?
All laser hair removal candidates should be at their lightest skin tone at the time of treatment. Having even the slightest tan can make it harder for the laser light to pass through your skin in order to heat the hair follicle. Being a light skinned person with a light tan makes the treatment more difficult than being a darker skinned person who has no tan or sun exposure at all. Your practitioner may even give you a topical bleaching cream to apply in the days or weeks before your appointment and regular sunscreen use is recommended.

What if I have Herpes?
The heat from the laser light can cause a herpes infection to become active if it is in the location of the area to be treated. Any such infection should be discussed with you practitioner before treatment begins.

What if I have a history of scarring?
Scarring is usually not of high concern to those that do not have this kind of history, but if you do then you should discuss it with your practitioner before the procedure begins.

Will it hurt?
The pain of the laser moving across your skin is slightly painful but mostly tolerable. It is rare that a topical anesthetic is required unless your skin is particularly sensitive.

Is Laser Hair Removal available for teenagers?
A teenager with unwanted hair might not want to shave just yet, or use wax and other methods because these methods can encourage more rapid hair growth in a teen whose body is not fully mature. Laser hair removal is an option to consider, but should be decided by both the parent and the teen. All laser hair removal clinics require a parent or legal guardian's consent to perform the procedure on a child under 18 years of age.

Can I still remove hair between treatments?
You may shave, use a depilatory cream or trim hairs. However, you should not use waxing, electrolysis or plucking or any method that removes the hair from the follicles.
